"Bamboo Forest, Concrete Jungle"
Photography print by Antoine Loncle
In April 2023 I visited Japan for the first time, and immediately fell in love with the country.
On my journey, I decided to bring along with me an old camera I found a while ago; A Kodak Folding Brownie, Model 3A. The camera was manufactured in 1905 and uses a type of film that is now no longer in production. I wanted to make use of it again, awakening it from its slumber, giving it once again the power to make images. Before the trip, I 3D-printed some adapters so that I could use modern film in the camera.
With very limited shots, I used this camera sparingly while in Japan. Two scenes which struck me the most were to become this diptych. The famous Bamboo forests of Kyoto, and the sprawling endless skyline of Tokyo. The two scenes I photographed embodied my first experience in Japan. I became enamored by the contrasts I saw. Beautiful greenery and deeply historical places, alongside towering skyscrapers and bright screens. A co-existence of old and new.
Photographed using a century-old camera with modern 3D-printed adapters then printed on traditional Japanese Washi paper, using the latest Giclée printers, the tools and materials themselves that were used to create this print reflect this co-existence.
